After a long journey, Broadway has joined the “herd” at High Hopes Therapeutic Riding Center in Old Lyme, CT. High Hopes is a unique horse farm:
The mission of High Hopes is to improve the lives of people with cognitive, physical, and emotional disabilities through the benefits of therapeutic horseback riding and other equine-assisted activities, while serving the therapeutic riding profession through training and education.
Broadway spent the 2008-09 winter in trial at High Hopes, and once he passed all of their tests was accepted as a therapy horse. Broadway has quickly become one of the “star” horses at High Hopes – requested by many of the students. He has truly found his stage on which to perform.
Broadway typically serve two participants per day, five or six days per week. The horses at High Hopes receive routine farrier care, vaccinations, regular worming and dental care. Occasionally they are also able to offer complementary therapies such as chiropractic, acupuncture, massage and trigger-point myotherapy. High Hopes is fortunate to have their 25 horses turned out 24 hours per day in small herds at their 126-acre facility, where they always have shelter available in three-sided sheds.
Harpur, after seeing the High Hopes program, began volunteering and spends her Monday afternoons and evenings at High Hopes schooling horses (including Broadway!), helping with lessons as a sidewalker, learning how to carriage drive and cleaning. She loves it and plans to spend some of her summer volunteering.
We could not be happier that Broadway has found a new “job” as a therapy horse and is giving back at High Hopes. If you’ve never been to High Hopes I recommend a visit and experience the amazing work they do. It is truly an extraordinary program!
